When I was a kid, my dad and I would snip out the fireworks schedule for the various nearby towns from the local paper – and we’d go to all of them. If we could we’d go to 2 or 3 in a night. For one week a year, I saw fireworks every night. I was a girl obsessed.

It’s been more difficult now that I live in Manhattan, since the fireworks often bring out insanely huge crowds. Watching on TV is just not. the. same. So I’ve actually missed them the past few years. Sadness!! I was determined to see them this year, so I hightailed it out of the city.

I intended on taking pictures of fireworks, and I came away documenting a couple’s love. I didn’t even really realize until I was going through the photos and this couple showed up in pretty much every one. It’s kind of amazing – a candid, brief moment in a couple’s journey together.

It started off subtly enough, since there were a fair amount of people around me watching.



Then the couple just seemed to move closer to me. He started taking pictures himself – of the fireworks, and of her. He took a lot of photos of her as she looked up at the fireworks.

It’s not as pretty as the Upper East Side, doesn’t smell as good, may not be as safe (a loosely defined word nowadays anyway), but it sure has more character. I’ve especially come to love Tompkins Square Park. Besides being known as a haven for the homeless in the 1980s, it is also the site of many a riot (1988, 1874, and 1863, and 1857!). Ahh. What’s not to love?



I considered making these photos brighter, but I kind of like the darkness mixed with the harsh glow of the streetlights. I was going to write some long flowery thing about comparing darkness and light, nature and technology, but it was all going to be pulled out of my butt and insincere. Honestly, I don’t take pictures for any sort of meaning. I take them because I think they are pretty.

None of these were taken with a tripod. I set my camera (a Canon 40D) to take an unlimited number of shots (well, as unlimited as the card is) while the shutter was held down. I figure at least some of them wouldn’t be blurry. I think, overall, I did okay considering 1. weak girl arms, 2. small girl hands, and 3. holding a 40D at 10:30 at night on a Sunday while also keeping an eye out for potential ne’er-do-wells.

Besides the usual guitar/bass/drums setup, there is also a cello, violin, and viola. The band’s songs are awesome – you can check them out at http://www.myspace.com/wyie. They were great people to work with, and the shoot was a lot of fun, despite the insane amount of wind!

The shoot took place in DUMBO, and I should also say that everyone was a great sport – not only was it windy, but it was freezing too!! Thanks guys!
