New York City Blizzard ● December 2010

Over the last few days, New York has been a complete disaster area (there’s quite a few news stories on it all). On Sunday afternoon, snow started falling, and it continued all through the night. I was looking out the window Sunday night at the snow and actually saw lightning (and heard thunder). I also went outside Sunday night, and there came a point where it was so windy and snowy that I literally couldn’t see ten feet in front of me. So I got scared and ran home (as is normal…right?). I worked up more courage yesterday and went out and around the East Village…and here are the results…

Snow Day

When I do a post so out of season like this, it becomes pretty obvious how backed up I am with blog entries. Whoops! But I figure, in the beginnings of a hot summer, sometimes looking back at how snowy it was in the winter is somewhat comforting and cooling, and also puts things in perspective. Remember this weather? It kind of blows when it’s going on at that moment! As hot as we all have been recently, I think it’s better than -20 degrees!

Back in February, on one glorious Friday it snowed so much that it essentially shut the city down. Without anything else to do and not a care in the world, I wrapped myself up as best I could and brought my camera and iPod along for a nice long walk. I love how random life can be.

After the Birthday

I love New York for the all the random things it offers up on a daily basis. Case in point (or, dare I say, “cake in point”? Sorry, I’m awful). Came across this on a rainy day in the middle of me moving stuff out of my old apartment into my new apartment. I was angry about the rain and tired and cranky, but this cheered me up right away. I didn’t have my camera with me, so I had to pause my moving activities to get it from my new place. Come back outside, realize I forgot where the cake was. Panic! I eventually found it though. Thank goodness nobody carted it away. Hahaha…

On the ground near the cake was a discarded lotto ticket. A wet birthday cake and a losing lotto ticket on a rainy day. I suppose I’d leave my cake too!

Portraits at the Carnival

Street fairs are always fun. I went to this fair to photograph a girl I had been in contact with about headshots, and ended up with these kind of shots. This is Billy, the safety and transportation director. And these were taken at a street fair set up in Spanish Harlem.

Things hanging on or from wires

I swear, this theme actually has enough photos in my collection to warrant a post! I guess I just like things that dangle from wires, or rest on top of them. Haha. Don’t judge.

Plus I like things that are kind of creepy. Of course a post like this wouldn’t be complete with the requisite “sneakers hanging from a wire” picture. And also: birds! Wow!

Snug Harbor

Recently I found myself at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center on Staten Island. The grounds are beautiful, and it’s relatively easy to get to via public transportation. Huzzah!

There’s lots of history there, which I kind of geek over. Mmm..history.

Scattered

I seem to be drawn to chaos. I took this photo in Boston while I was wandering around unsupervised (it happens from time to time, and usually doesn’t end well). Someone dropped a container of blueberries and ran away from the scene of the crime.

Sometimes chaos can appear neat and orderly. This is in New Mexico, at White Sands. I learned from the informative pamphlet given to me by the park ranger that the sand at White Sands is constantly shifting. I guess all sand does though. God, my commentary is so fascinating, isn’t it?

And these little guys were taken in Manhattan, the center of car break-ins. God bless America.

What Happens when I go to Williamsburg

……..I scare people into inadvertently posing.

And I take pictures of people without them knowing and feel creepy as a result.

Since I don’t go to Brooklyn much at all, I allow myself to step outside my comfort zone (which results in being creepy and startling people).
